The Arts

Singing and instrumental music produced by woodwind or brass instruments are thought to be higher-risk activities for COVID-19 spread due to the aggressive expelling of respiratory droplets.  It is important to take extra precautions when participating in musical activities, especially if they involve vocalists and wind instrument musicians who are not yet vaccinated.  To this end, the District is taking the following precautions:
  • Outdoor rehearsals and performances are encouraged, when possible
  • HVAC controls are set to meet or exceed the recommended six (6) full room exchanges of fresh air per hour
  • Microphones must be disinfected after each speaker/singer
  • Singers, musicians, and teachers are to maintain three (3) feet of social distancing at all times.
  • All musicians are required to wear face coverings while performing or rehearsing indoors.
  • Indoor rehearsals are limited to 30 minutes or less of active singing and playing.  

Instrumental Music
  • Elementary recorder lessons are cancelled for the first two marking periods of the 2021.22 school year.  A decision on the final two marking periods will be made based on conditions at the end of the second marking period. 
  • Instrumental lessons and rehearsal are permitted provided students are at least three (3) or more feet of social distance is used between musicians and appropriate bell covers are used.  (Bell covers reduce the droplets and aerosols produced when playing wind instruments.)
  • Students may not share mouthpieces of any instrument.
  • Students must follow the safety precautions of the teacher when clearing spit valves to eliminate the possibility of contact with others and to allow proper disposal thereof.
  • Students are required to follow the manufacturer's instructions and thoroughly clean their instruments between uses.
  • Masks must be worn inside while playing instruments.
  • Brass and woodwind musicians are required to use bell coverings for their instruments to reduce droplet spread while performing indoors. 
  • Musicians are encouraged to wash their hands before and after each lesson, rehearsal, and performance.

Vocal Music
  • Masks must be worn inside while singing.
  • Vocal rehearsals are permitted indoors provided students are at least three (3) or more feet of social distance exists between performers and performers are all facing the same direction.
  • Where possible, teachers should arrange singers to maximize distance between individuals with the goal of six (6) or more feet between singers.

Visual Arts
  • All students and staff are required to wear masks when indoors.
  • Students are to maintain a minimum of three (3) feet of social distancing at all times.
  • Arts are encouraged to wash their hands before and after the use of any shared materials.

Dance
  • All students and staff are required to wear masks when indoors.
  • Students are to maintain a minimum of three (3) feet of social distancing at all times.
  • Dancer should avoid physical contact as much as possible.
  • Dancers are encouraged to wash their hands before and after lessons, rehearsals, and performances.
